Technology Lifecycle at CSU

Individual departments and colleges at CSU determine the frequency of replacing older technology with newer technology.  Technology, including computers, that no longer have a place in a department or college is transferred to Surplus Property.  Our team of knowledgeable technicians take all technology that is received and assess its value and usefulness to the campus community and the general marketplace.

After a general assessment, technology goes through a process to wipe all data containing devices, keeping sensitive data out of the hands of nefarious actors.  Devices are basic tested for functionality and a price determined. They are then set out for sale on our sales floor, or through our online auctions.  Devices that are not functional or recoverable are broken down into component parts and recycled through a various stream of recycle vendors to maximize the return of value to CSU and to responsibly dispose of any electronic components.

We can also recycle your personal electronics!  Visit our Service Fees page for more information on pricing for this service.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Windows Based Computers

Unfortunately, due to licensing constraints, Windows based computers do not have an operating system installed on them.  Due to these restrictions, we are not allowed to install a Windows operating system on any computer.

Apple Products

Apple products will typically have the most current version of OS installed that is available for the model being sold.  This includes iPhones, iPads, and Mac’s.

All items are sold on a First Come/First Served basis and we do not do holds of any kind or for any time period.  The property sold by Colorado State University (“CSU”) to seller is AS IS and with all faults, latent and patent.  CSU makes no warranties with respect to the property, and there are no implied warranties of merchantability or of fitness for a particular purpose.  CSU further makes no representations concerning the condition or intended use of the property.  Buyer bears all responsibility for the use, protection and/or storage of the property.

Yes!  We have a fully equipped test bench for you to test any item before it is purchased.  Because we are not able to install an operating system on Windows devices, those will only POST.  We also ask that you DO NOT sign-in to any of our Apple devices as we will have to re-process the device to erase your login information, which causes us extra time and effort.

We are unable to fully test the health of the battery before sale. If during our inspection we notice unhealthy signs in the battery it is removed before sale. During testing the laptop is plugged into the power supply. Afterwards we remove the plug and see if the battery is holding this charge for a few minutes. In this case we clearly label battery untested. This means the battery is functional to some degree we just don’t know how strong it is. In the case the battery clearly is holding no charge we label the device as BAD BATTERY/NO BATTERY. In the case of apple laptops we label the cycle count and full charge capacity on the device.

We do NOT guarantee that a particular phone will work with a particular carrier.  This is up to the purchaser to verify.

Verifying the compatibility of phones from our surplus inventory is a straightforward process. To conduct an IMEI check for phones associated with a specific carrier, please use the designated carrier’s (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Mint, Boost, etc.) IMEI check tool that can be found online. The IMEI number, conveniently located on the back of each phone, can be entered into the provided interface on the website. Alternatively, you have the option to contact your carrier directly and inquire whether the given IMEI number is compatible with their network.

Due to a contract in place at CSU, 99% of phones will be from the Verizon network.

All prices are set and are NON-NEGOTIABLE.  Prices are monitored and adjusted weekly for items.
